GENERAL SUMMARY

The General Grounds Worker, under the direction of the Grounds Manager is responsible for performing skilled work under general supervision in the maintenance, preventative maintenance, service and repair, ensuring proper oil and fluid levels of all landscaping/snow removal equipment, machinery, facilities and grounds to ensure a proper and safe environment of care for all sisters, students, staff, employees and visitors.  Ensures proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is supplied, used and maintenance correctly.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Upholds the mission and values of SND USA.
  2. Integrates the charism, values, mission and philosophy of the Sisters of Notre Dame in all services.
  3. Perform a variety of maintenance, construction duties, landscaping, snow removal, grounds work relative to assigned fields in grounds expertise following established procedures.
  4. Ensure assigned work orders are completed in a timely manner and completed satisfactorily.
  5. Ensure special task assignments are completed to the satisfaction of the Grounds Manager and the department.
  6. Report emergencies and safety issues; Respond to fire alarms and disaster calls; Respond to any calls and all emergencies arising in the facilities and on the grounds.
  7. Work with, assist and advise supervisory team members (Facilities and Grounds Managers) of work requirements about ongoing job situations and future requirements and needs.
  8. Fill out any necessary paperwork, daily logs and other job records in accordance with prescribed procedures and in a timely manner.
  9. Perform duties of other department members if adequate manpower is not available and the work assigned to them whether or not those particular duties are listed in the position description.
  10. Read and interpret technical specifications and operating instructions to determine methods of maintenance, installation, service and repair for equipment.
  11. Work with the Ground Manager, department supervisors and others to provide proper training, instruction, education, and in-servicing for skilled or lesser skilled team members as needed, requested or required.
  12. Participate in training and/or schooling provided by the department and/or the institution for improving job performance and/or updating job skills.
  13.   Duties may include moving furniture, assisting with funerals and construction work.
  14. Responsible for the use, maintenance, storage and security of all tools, equipment and materials used within the department.
  15. Demonstrate the ability to take direction and initiate actions that will allow for opportunities for cross-functional duties and independent decision making to ensure seamless service as appropriate.
  16. Consistently demonstrate the ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner by adapting assignments to meet operational needs.
  17. Minimize non-productive time to fill slow periods with activities that will enable you to prepare the institution’s needs (i.e. organizing, cleaning out stock/store rooms, boiler rooms, garages, shops, assisting others).
  18. Work in a positive manner to enhance interdepartmental and intradepartmental relationships and to promote efficiency and communications.
  19. Maintain appropriate licensure, certification, and competencies required to perform job responsibilities.
  20. Accept positive and constructive feedback in order to implement changes necessary to enhance performance and personal development.
  21. Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding the safety and security of sisters, students, staffs, employees, visitors.
  22. Ensure compliance with regulatory and compliance standards.
  23. Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Demonstrated ability to read and write.
  3. One year work experience in a related maintenance, landscaping, or construction field.
  4. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions and work from simple drawings and sketches.
  5. Demonstrated initiative and aptitude for physical labor, landscaping, shoveling snow, unloading pallets of goods, trash pick-up and disposal, and other routine tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position may entail evening and weekend work.  Must live the mission of SND USA and maintain and build a positive work environment. 

  1. Must possess sufficient physical ability to perform necessary heavy lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing, twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, walking, etc. as position requires.
  2. Could be required to work at any satellite SND facility.
  3. Required to respond to and be available for on-call, off-duty emergencies and funerals that arise, and community and school events as needed.
  4. Required to carry a radio and cell phone if deemed necessary.
  5. Required to learn/use various heavy equipment/vehicles, hand, and power tools in the completion of duties.
  6. Required to have a valid driver’s license and drive on road company vehicles
  7. Repetitive lifting of 50 lbs.
  8. Ability to lift 100 lbs.
  9. Endure inclement weather including rain and extreme heat and cold.
